If you're looking to build a career in the aviation or airline industries, a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management from University of Michigan Science can put you on the track to success. Your courses in the Aviation Management program will emphasize the importance of general education, and a healthy dose of business courses will help you grapple with the business side of the industry. Concentrations

Airline Operations: Focuses on the operations side of airline management. You will learn the fundamentals of financial accounting, as well as the particulars of managerial accounting. Through this concentration, you will develop an understanding of the financial challenges as applied to the aviation industry, including an overview of the accounting cycle, financial statements, and ethical responsibilities. You will learn how to manage the challenges and ultimately address them.

Airport Management: Focuses primarily on conveying the logistical knowledge and management skills necessary to oversee the management of an airport. You will study project management with the ultimate goal of becoming a Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®). Topics covered within this concentration include airport and airspace capacity management, the relationship between delay and capacity, aircraft operating characteristics, and airline scheduling practices. Through this concentration, you will develop a firm understanding of the challenges that make airport management unique.

General Education Program

Our programs are designed to equip you with the skills and insights you need to move forward. In recent years, employers have stressed the need for graduates with higher order skills - the skills that go beyond technical knowledge - such as:

All undergraduate students are required to take general education classes. Through foundation, exploration and integration courses, students learn to think critically, creatively and collaboratively, giving you the edge employers are looking for.

Business Core Program

Programs in the School of Business require learners to complete the business core program, which includes a variety of business-specific courses. This program focuses on 10 core competencies to prepare you for success wherever you go.

Courses May Include

Aircraft Operating Economics
This course covers the analysis of aircraft operating capabilities, the capital value of aircraft, and the cost of aircraft operation. An emphasis will be placed on identifying the interrelationship between these three factors. Aircraft from the basic general aviation trainers to large commercial transports will be included. Computer applications programs will be used in the analysis and presentation of information.

Program Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of and be able to apply the fundamental aeronautical skills necessary to function as a manager in the aviation industry
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and be able to use the business tools, skills and concepts to address practical business problems in the aviation industry
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and be able to apply aviation safety issues in all problem solving exercises
  • Apply mathematics, science, and applied sciences to aviation-related disciplines
  • Communicate the principles necessary to integrate as an employee at a fixed base operations company, an commercial airline, and/or at an airport
  • Apply management methodology in identifying and solving management issues
  • Communicate effectively, using both written and oral communication skills, as an entry-level manager
  • Understand the United States National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS), regulatory agencies, rules, rule making and processes
